WinPortrait Features

--------------------

* Resolution and Font Size

   Use the WinPortrait Preferences Applet in the Control Panel to change

   the resolution and font size. Try different combinations to determine

   which gives you the best readability. Select 1024x768 and Small Fonts

   to be able to view a full page within your application. You may also

   have to adjust the zoom feature in your application to see a full

   page.

   Some drivers now feature 1152x864 and 1280x1024 resolutions. If the

   driver you are using has the higher resolutions available, the

   corresponding buttons will be enabled on the WinPortrait Preferences

   Applet dialog box after you have installed the driver.

   1152x864 and 1280x1024 resolutions are supported for the following

   chips, provided that the video board has at least 2 Mb of RAM:

   S3           924,801,805,864,964,968,

		Trio (805i,864,964,Trio HiColor)

   1280x1024 resolution only is supported for the following chipsets,

   provided that the video board has at least 2Mb of RAM:

   ATI           mach64

   NOTE: Refresh rates at 1152x864 and 1280x1024 will only be available

	 at 60 Hz, so flicker may be evident at these resolutions.

* Rotating the Screen Image

   The recommended method of rotating the screen image is to use the

   default WinPortrait Hot-Key Combination of <Ctrl>+<Shift>+<R>.

   Also, the WinPortrait Rotate Icon can be used as an alternate method

   for rotating your screen image. Just "Double Click" on the

   WinPortrait Rotate icon to rotate the screen image.

* HiColor Support

   The WinPortrait HiColor driver works with S3 based boards using the

   805i, 864, 928 or Trio chip with 2MB of video memory. This driver

   allows applications to display 65,536 colors at once. Therefore, the

   HiColor driver should only be used with specific applications where this

   support is needed. For general business and word processing use, this

   driver should not used since the performance is about half of the

   standard driver (256 colors).

* SYSTEM.INI Backup

   The WinPortrait Setup program makes a backup copy of your SYSTEM.INI

   file after the WinPortrait drivers are installed. If there is a

   problem and you need to change back to your old video driver, look in

   the SYSTEM.WP file for the previous settings.

* Refresh Meter

   The WinPortrait Refresh Meter measures the vertical refresh rate of

   your video card. This Windows application is located on Disk 2. You

   can check the refresh rate by choosing from the Program Manager: File,

   Run, and typing "REFRESH". For a flicker free image, the refresh

   rate should be 70 Hz or above.

* Automatic Refresh Rate Set

   The WinPortrait drivers now support automatic setting of the vertical

   refresh rate for selected board/chip combinations. Currently, the

   following chipsets and boards support auto-refresh rate:

                All Cirrus Logic chipsets EXCEPT GD5429;

                All MACH64-based boards (Graphics Expression, etc.);

                All S3 boards (Trio, 928, 864, 964, 968, etc.).

  In Windows 3.11, you may set the auto-refresh rate only during

  installation with the SETUP.EXE utility. The WinPortrait

  Monitor Types are:

                MICROSCAN 17X The driver will set a higher

                                                refresh rate for selected

                                                chip/board combinations.

                NO AUTO-REFRESH if selected, the driver

                                                will not attempt to set

                                                the refresh rate.

   If you choose "NO AUTO-REFRESH", or if the WinPortrait drivers do not

   set the refresh rate for your video board, you may be able to use DOS

   utilities included with your video board.

   Many refresh rate utilities, such as S3REFRSH.EXE from S3 and CLMODE

   from Cirrus Logic, modify the boot-up procedures and will give you

   the correct refresh rate without needing to be run by hand again.

   If you do not have a DOS refresh rate utility, your board manufacturer

   should be able to supply you with one, either by mail or through a BBS.

Applications Not "Rotate friendly"

----------------------------------

In Windows 3.1, a few applications are not "Rotate friendly". These

applications are unable to correctly re-size themselves when rotating

from one orientation to another. These applications will function

correctly when used in one orientation only. Therefore, it is advisable

not to rotate in the middle of a session.

The following is a list of known Windows applications that are not

Rotate friendly under Windows 3.1:

   Adobe PhotoShop 2.5

   After Dark 3.0

   Microsoft Word 6.0

   Norton Desktop

   Ventura Publisher

   WordPerfect 6.0

   Connectix Ram Doubler for Windows

WinPortrait Installation

------------------------

The WinPortrait Setup will make the following changes to your system:

   1. Copy WINPCTRL.EXE to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory

   2. Copy WINPPREF.CPL to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory

   3. Copy REFRESH.EXE to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory

   4. Copy WP??????.DRV to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory

   5. Copy OEM?????.WPI to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory

   6. Copy PREFHLP.TXT to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory

   7. Make a backup of the SYSTEM.INI file as SYSTEM.WP

   8. Copy Font, VDD, and Grabber files to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory

   9. Add WINPCTRL to the LOAD line in the WIN.INI file

  10. Add the [WinPortrait] section in the SYSTEM.INI file

Filenames with a '?' means the name depends on the board selected. See

the WinPortrait Drivers section below for a list of the files.

To remove WinPortrait from your system, delete the files in items 1-6.

To determine which WPI file to delete, you may have to look inside each

OEM?????.WPI file. It is not necessary to delete the files in item 8.

Once the files are deleted, then remove the text added to the INI files

in items 9-10.
